Arudha Padas: The Difference Between Who You Are and How You Appear

Arudha Padas in Jaimini show your image in society, often quite different from your lagna reality. Here is how to read the gap.

Jaimini's Arudha Pada is the answer to a deceptively simple question: what does the world see when it looks at you? Your lagna shows who you are; your Arudha Lagna (AL) shows what others perceive you as. The two often disagree dramatically.

How to compute the Arudha

Take the 1st house. Find its lord. Count how many signs that lord is from the 1st. Count the same number again from the lord — that sign is your Arudha Lagna.

Example: Lagna is Aries. Lord is Mars. Mars is in the 5th (Leo). Count 5 from Leo: Sagittarius. Sagittarius is your Arudha Lagna.

There are exclusion rules: the Arudha cannot be in the 1st or 7th from the original house. If it lands there, take the 10th from there.

The reading

  • If your AL is in the same sign as your lagna — what you are and what people see line up. Refreshingly rare.
  • If AL is in the 7th — people see your opposite. Quiet introverts perceived as influencers, fierce people perceived as gentle.
  • If AL is in a fiery sign and lagna in a watery sign — gentle nature, public reputation as 'aggressive'. Common among misunderstood public figures.

Beyond the AL

Every house has its own Arudha — A2 to A12. They tell you the appearance of each life area:

  • A2 — perceived wealth (often very different from actual)
  • A7 — perceived spouse / partner. People often see your spouse as different from how you see them.
  • A10 — perceived career, public role
  • A12 — perceived spending, perceived spirituality

Why it matters

Reputation is real currency. The Arudha is often what gets you the job, the marriage, the loan, regardless of who you actually are. A weak lagna with a strong AL produces social success that the native cannot quite explain. A strong lagna with a weak AL produces talented people who never get the credit.
