Privacy Policy

How we collect, use and protect your personal data — including the sensitive information you share for an astrological reading.

Karmgyan ('we', 'us', 'our') is operated by Karmgyan Technologies Private Limited. This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect when you use karmgyan.com (the 'Platform'), how we use it, who we share it with, and your rights under the applicable laws of India, including the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act) and the Information Technology Act, 2000.

By using the Platform, you consent to the practices described here. If you do not agree, please discontinue use.

1. Information We Collect

  • Identifying information — name, email, phone number, gender (when you create an account or place a consultation order).
  • Birth details — date, time and place of birth. These are sensitive astrological inputs and are treated as Sensitive Personal Data or Information (SPDI) under Indian law.
  • Payment information — UPI IDs, card data, billing addresses (processed by our payment partner; we do not store full card numbers).
  • Usage data — pages visited, charts generated, kundli reports downloaded, time on page, device and browser type.
  • Communications — chat transcripts, consultation notes, support tickets, and any content you submit on the Platform.

2. How We Use Your Information

  • To compute astrological charts, panchang, dasha, compatibility analyses and personalised recommendations.
  • To deliver consultations, reports and notifications you have requested.
  • To process payments and prevent fraud.
  • To send service-related emails (receipts, account changes) and, with your consent, marketing or content updates.
  • To comply with legal obligations including tax, GST, anti-money-laundering and law-enforcement requests.
  • To improve the Platform — debugging, analytics, A/B tests on de-identified data.

3. Birth Data — Special Handling

Your date, time and place of birth are the most sensitive inputs you provide. We treat them with the same rigor as health data.

  • Stored encrypted at rest and in transit.
  • Accessible only to you, the astrologer assigned to your consultation, and authorised Karmgyan staff under strict need-to-know rules.
  • Never sold, rented or used for advertising profiling.
  • Deleted on request within 30 days of a verified deletion request, except where retention is mandated by law.

4. Sharing of Information

We share personal data only with:

  • Astrologers and consultants empanelled on Karmgyan, strictly for the consultation you have purchased.
  • Payment service providers (e.g., Razorpay, Cashfree) to process transactions.
  • Cloud hosting providers (data centres in India where feasible).
  • Analytics tools that operate on de-identified or aggregated data.
  • Government authorities, when legally compelled by a valid order.

5. Cookies and Tracking

We use cookies and similar technologies for session management, preference storage, and analytics. You can disable cookies in your browser, though some features (saved kundli, login) will not work.

6. Your Rights

  • Right to access — request a copy of your personal data.
  • Right to correction — update inaccurate data.
  • Right to erasure — request deletion (subject to legal retention).
  • Right to grievance — raise complaints with our Grievance Officer (see Grievance page).
  • Right to withdraw consent — for marketing communications, by clicking 'unsubscribe' in any email.

7. Data Retention

We retain account and consultation records for as long as your account is active, plus 7 years to meet financial and legal record-keeping requirements. Anonymised analytics data may be retained indefinitely.

8. Security

We employ industry-standard safeguards — TLS encryption, hashed passwords (argon2id), encrypted storage for SPDI, role-based access controls, regular security reviews. No method of transmission is 100% secure; we will notify affected users and the Data Protection Board within 72 hours of any data breach that meets the regulatory threshold.

9. Children

Karmgyan is intended for users 18 years and older. If we learn we have collected personal data from a minor without verifiable parental consent, we will delete it promptly.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The 'last updated' date at the top reflects the latest revision. Material changes will be communicated by email or in-app notice.
