Kaal Sarp Yoga: Dreaded, Diluted, or Real?

Kaal Sarp Yoga has 12 variants. Only 3 of them are genuinely restrictive. Here is how to identify which one applies and what to do.

Kaal Sarp Yoga is the most over-quoted dosha after Mangal Dosha. Online astrology pages declare it on any chart where all 7 main planets fall on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis. Classical texts are far stricter, recognising at least 12 specific variants and treating only some as genuinely restrictive.

The basic definition

If the 7 main planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn — all sit between Rahu and Ketu, going one way around the zodiac, you have a Kaal Sarp configuration. The native is said to be 'caught in the serpent's coil' until the configuration releases by transit or dasha.

12 named variants

Each variant is named after the houses Rahu and Ketu occupy:

  • Anant Kaal Sarp (Rahu in 1, Ketu in 7) — challenges in personality and partnerships.
  • Kulik (Rahu in 2, Ketu in 8) — finance, family, longevity issues.
  • Vasuki (3-9) — ambition, journey blocks, dharmic confusion.
  • Shankhpal (4-10) — domestic and career tension.
  • Padma (5-11) — children, creativity, gain delays.
  • Mahapadma (6-12) — enemies, debts, foreign-land complications.
  • Takshak (7-1) — partnerships, marriage delays.
  • Karkotak (8-2) — sudden upheavals, unexpected changes.
  • Shankhanaad (9-3) — wisdom blocks, sibling discord.
  • Ghatak (10-4) — career instability.
  • Vishdhar (11-5) — fluctuating gains and child-related worries.
  • Sheshnag (12-6) — expenses, hidden enemies, hospitalisation.

The 3 truly restrictive ones

Most experienced astrologers consider only Anant, Kulik and Mahapadma as serious. The others are real but milder, and many cancel under the right Lagna or transit. Even the serious three usually release by mid-life as transits redistribute the planets across the axis.

Remedies that classical texts endorse

  • Naga puja or Sarpa-sukta recitation — the most direct.
  • Bathing with milk and offering it at a serpent stone (Naga Pratishta) on Naga Panchami.
  • Fasting on Panchami tithis when the configuration is active in transit.

What it does not mean

Kaal Sarp Yoga does not curse your life. Many highly accomplished public figures have it. It points to a specific kind of timing — slow starts, dramatic mid-life releases — rather than a permanent sentence. The astrologer who tells you it's a death-dealer either does not know better or is selling something.
