Mangal Dosha: Separating Myth from Method

Mangal Dosha — also called Manglik or Kuja Dosha — is the single most-feared label in Indian matchmaking. It also has the highest false-positive rate. Most cookie-cutter matching apps stamp 'Manglik' if Mars is in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house and stop there. Classical astrologers do not.

What classical texts actually say

• Muhurta Chintamani and BPHS list the houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 and 12 from the lagna as positions where Mars can afflict the marriage karaka.
• But every text also lists cancellations. There are at least 8 well-known ones, and any of them neutralises the dosha. We apply all 8 in our matching engine.

The 5-step verification astrologers actually use

• Check from Lagna, Moon, and Venus. The dosha must apply from at least two of these three references for it to be a serious concern.
• Check the navamsa. If Mars is well-placed in D9 (own sign, exalted, in a kendra), the D1 dosha is mostly cosmetic.
• Check Mars's dignity. Mars in own sign (Aries, Scorpio) or exaltation (Capricorn) does not afflict — Mars is happy there.
• Check Jupiter / Venus aspect. A direct aspect from Jupiter or Venus on Mars or on the 7th house is a classical cancellation.
• Check both partners. If both have Mangal Dosha, it cancels. This is the 'Manglik–Manglik match' rule.

What if it is real?

If Mars is genuinely afflicting after all five checks, the classical advice is patience, not panic. Common-sense remedies — Mangal Shanti puja, Hanuman Chalisa, Tuesday fasting — are prescribed because Mars is the planet of impatience and impulse, and these practices condition the native to slow down.
