Rahu and Ketu: The Shadow Axis of Karma

Rahu and Ketu are not planets — they are the two points where the Moon's orbit cuts the ecliptic. The ancients called them shadow-bodies (chayagrahas), and assigned them planetary status because their effect on the chart is anything but shadowy. They move always retrograde, always together, always 180° apart. They are an axis, not two points.

Why the nodes feel different

• Rahu is amplification. Whatever house and sign it sits in, it inflates — sometimes desire, sometimes fear, almost always obsession.
• Ketu is reduction. The opposite house feels under-served, instinctive, sometimes painfully detached.
• Together they form your karmic axis: where you came from (Ketu), and what you are reaching for (Rahu).

The classical reading

BPHS treats Rahu and Ketu as significators of past-life karma — not in a fatalistic sense, but as deep-seated tendencies the soul carries forward. Ketu is the well-rehearsed skill you barely notice; Rahu is the awkward stretch toward something new.

A native with Ketu in the 4th and Rahu in the 10th has spent past lives close to family and is now being pulled toward public work. The instinct is to retreat home (Ketu); the dharma is to step into the world (Rahu).

Rahu is famous for what it tricks

Rahu fools more astrologers than any other planet. It mimics whichever planet conjoins it. Rahu with Jupiter looks like a guru but may be a guru of illusion. Rahu with Venus inflames desire to addiction levels. Always read what Rahu touches twice.

Ketu is gentler but more lonely. It silently subtracts. People with strong Ketu placements feel inexplicably detached from areas where life expects them to invest.

Working with the axis

• Don't fight Rahu by avoidance. The lesson is to engage and discriminate, not to flee.
• Don't ignore Ketu. The skills it represents are real — they just need conscious application.
• Eclipses on your nodal axis are the loudest activations. They mark the years your karmic axis demands attention.
