Vimshottari Dasha: The 120-Year Timeline of Your Life

Of the dozens of dasha systems in Jyotisha, Vimshottari is the default. Parashara devotes special attention to it. It assumes a 120-year human lifespan and divides it among 9 planetary periods of fixed length.

The fixed allocation

• Ketu — 7 years
• Venus — 20 years
• Sun — 6 years
• Moon — 10 years
• Mars — 7 years
• Rahu — 18 years
• Jupiter — 16 years
• Saturn — 19 years
• Mercury — 17 years

Where you start

Your starting dasha is not the planet of your ascendant or the planet of your Sun. It is the lord of the nakshatra your Moon was in at birth. If your Moon was in Bharani (Venus's nakshatra), you start with Venus dasha. If it was in Pushya (Saturn's nakshatra), you start with Saturn dasha.

How much of that first dasha you have used up depends on how far the Moon had travelled into the nakshatra. A Moon at the start of Bharani gives you a near-full 20 years of Venus dasha; a Moon near the end gives you only a few months before Sun takes over.

The drill-down levels

• Mahadasha — the headline 6 to 20 years.
• Antardasha — sub-period inside the Maha. Same 9-planet sequence, scaled. So a 19-year Saturn Maha contains 9 antardashas of varying length.
• Pratyantardasha — sub-sub. Useful for monthly forecasts.
• Sookshma and Prana — minute-level. Used by KP-trained astrologers for horary timing.

How to read it without overwhelm

Look at the Mahadasha–Antardasha pair active right now. The Mahadasha lord sets the decade's theme; the Antardasha lord supplies the immediate flavour. Pair these two and ask: where are these planets in my chart? What houses do they own? What do they aspect?

If the Maha lord is your 10th lord and the Antar lord is your 11th lord, the next two years are about career promotion and gains. If the Maha is the 8th lord and Antar is the 12th, expect transitions, isolation, deeper work.
